NYR Midgets win GTHL championship, move on to OHFs

The North York Rangers Midget ‘AAA’ club are the Greater Toronto Hockey League champions for the 2015-16 season.

Head Coach Rob Vessio’s men eliminated the Markham Majors and Don Mills Flyers, before a resounding 9-1 victory in the final series vs. the Mississauga Rebels.

The club, that contains nine NYR Junior ‘A’ affiliated players, downed the Rebels 4-1 in Game 5 on Sunday at Scotiabank Pond, sealing a finals win in which they outscored the opposition 16-6.

Five the midgets played at least one game for Brent Hughes’ junior club this year, including captain William Calverley, Jason Pineo, Aiden Casey, Jeremy Smith, and Jett Alexander.

James Turner, Liam Gillanders, Daniel Tsiampas, and Sean Josling were also available to Coach Hughes.

The midgets also feature 2014 OHL Cup champions William Hunter and Eric Wong.

Coach Vessio’s team will now rest up and practice ahead of the 2016 Central Region Midget championship to be held in Waterloo, ONT. March 27 to Apr. 3.

There they will take on the champions of the Alliance, the London Jr. Knights; the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves, the champions of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association; the Whitby Wildcats, the Ontario Minor Hockey Association champions; a team from the Ottawa region; and the host Waterloo Wolves, for the right to represent the region at the 2016 Telus Cup in New Brunswick in late April.

The GTHL champion Toronto Young Nationals won the Telus Cup last year.
