The North York Rangers have acquired defenceman Matthew Ferrari from the Newmarket Hurricanes in exchange for the defenceman Jake DeMaeyer, the club announced Monday.
Ferrari, 18, has played in 99 Ontario Junior Hockey League contests over his career, all with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. The Woodbridge native had been acquired by Newmarket in the off-season, but never featured for them.
Listed at 6’, and 175 pounds, Ferrari has 54 career OJHL points and is known as a high-end two-way defender.
He excelled as a Toronto Marlboros major midget in the 2013-14 campaign before stepping into junior.
DeMaeyer, 20, appeared in 45 games for the Rangers over the past two seasons since being acquired from Junior ‘B’ Pelham in the 2015 off-season.
A native of Markham, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound DeMaeyer will provide the Hurricanes with experience, physicality and a great locker-room presence.
