Matthew Whittaker scored a hat trick and Will Reilly’s overtime winner gave the Rangers their only lead of the game as North York edged the Newmarket Hurricanes 5-4 on Thursday.
Reilly’s OT marker came 3:55 into the extra frame when he wristed home a centring feed from Michael Morgan from the high slot. It was his second career Ontario Junior Hockey League game-winning goal.
Whittaker’s scored his first 45 seconds into the second period by burying a rare five-on-three shorthanded goal.
Anthony Paveglio got the club’s second at 3:11 of the middle period when his screened wrist shot evaded Hurricanes’ goaltender Connor Ryckman.
Whittaker blasted home a rebound at 3:46 of the third, and then completed the trick with just less than seven minutes remaining in regulation by converting on a centring feed from Zach Fung.
Gianluca Baggetta made 25 saves, most notably a miraculous glove stop in overtime, to preserve his 10th victory of the year.
Brett Seldon and Nick Zanette both added two-point games, while the Rangers were missing five regulars from the line up.
North York has now won six of the last seven, and sits two points behind first place in the OJHL South.
They are next in action Saturday evening when they travel to Mississauga to battle the Chargers. Puck drops at 8 pm at Port Credit Arena.
