The Wellington Dukes gutted out a close 4-2 win against the North York Rangers.
Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Luc Brown secured the win for Wellington with a goal in the second period.
Josh Supryka had one goal and two assists to lead the Dukes. Supryka scored on the power play 18:55 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Wellington. A slashing penalty on Matthew Whittaker had put Wellington on the power play. Brown picked up the assist.
The Dukes excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. Wellington kept North York’s goalie busy throughout the game, and Gianluca Baggettamade 29 saves on 33 shots.
Wellington additionally got points from Brown, who also tallied two goals and one assist. Abbott Girduckis also scored for Wellington. In addition, Wellington received assists from Marco Azzano, who had two and Brody Morris, Andrew Coupland, and Will Cook, who contributed one each.
The Rangers’ offense rang up 40 shots on the Dukes’ net. Team’s forwards weren’t the only contributers offensively, and the team’s defensemen showcased their scoring touch with two goals.
North York was helped by Will Reilly, who registered one goal. Reilly scored 9:39 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Wellington. Gabriel Valenzuela provided the assist. North York also got a goal from Jeremy Szabo as well.
Wellington’s Olivier Lafreniere stopped 38 shots out of the 40 that he faced. The Dukes incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. The Rangers incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
