Adam Valadao notched two goals and Liam Kerins added two helpers but it was not enough as the North York Rangers battled for a point in a 3-2 overtime loss in Cobourg to the Cougars Monday night.
The point helped the Rangers maintain a one-point hold as the sole possessors of fifth place in the Southwest Conference.
Corey Kalk made his return to the lineup after representing Canada East at the World Junior A Challenge as North York has taken points in seven of its last nine contests.
John Carpino and Patrick Piacentini both added assists and Gianluca Baggetta made 28 saves and remains unbeaten in regulation in six starts.
Connor Armour scored twice, including in overtime, to lift the Cougars to the come from behind win.
The Rangers are next in action Friday night as they head to Oakville to take on the Blades in a crucial South Division battle.
